A Day in the Life of a Journalist

I’m just beginning my adventure…stay tuned

I Am About To Make The Big Leap

Tell us your story!

I’ve been on this local rag for nearly 8 years. In the beginning all my articles were late and I was using a notepad and pencil. I soon learned to use the keyboard instead, and caught up with the aces.

I thought any opportunities to work in broadcast had long passed me by until now…

I haven’t told anybody in the newsroom about my possible move – even the adorable Val in the canteen – I will definitely miss the daily flirt over my black coffee and 2 sugars!

Time to tell ‘the Boss’ – he is a naturally funny guy. Sometimes when he passes by, even without him saying anything, he makes me burst out laughing. Hope I can restrain myself this time.

Well all is said and done. Went better than I thought – he seemed to know what I was going to tell him when I suggested we close his office door – a sure sign of what was to come for him and the newsroom!

Sure enough – didn’t even make it back to my little corner of the office when the news was out! Some shock from the other stalwarts, and the eager cubs were chomping at the bit for information on obtaining their ultimate goal of an anchor position!

The countdown is on! 3 weeks to go… might just about be able to clear my desk by then!

Starting to get a bit annoyed now – since I handed in my notice I have been relegated to the most mundane tasks, spending most of my time with Val in the canteen - at least she’s not holding any grudges.

Possibly the quickest weekend of my life – not much time to prepare and I can only imagine what awaits me on Monday morning…

Tried to get the balance of not looking super eager and still arriving on time… Had been told to get there at 10am so they could get on with the editorial meeting before I settled in. Can see my new colleagues through the glass partition.

30mins after I arrive the Editor comes to collect me – saving me from the stares of the bubble gum-popping receptionist!

I like him – he’s got a presence in the newsroom and seems totally involved with everyone’s stories. There’s definitely a different energy here.

I quickly shirk of my suit jacket – all the other guys are in jeans with open collars. Feel a little bit intimidated as I am clearly older – but the Editor has assured me that’s what they wanted – an experienced hack to add weight to their bulletins.
